Nikon’s RED-powered ZR is being torture-tested live at CABSAT Dubai

Nikon’s acquisition of RED in 2024 was always going to be judged on what it produced rather than what it promised, and at CABSAT 2026 in Dubai the company is putting that integration in front of the region’s working filmmakers. Its pitch is clear: cinema-grade RAW footage from a camera body small enough to sit on a gimbal without much fuss.

The centrepiece is the Nikon ZR, a compact full-frame camera from the company’s Z CINEMA line that records internally in R3D NE. This is a 12-bit RAW format built specifically for Nikon cameras and based on RED’s R3D technology, including RED’s colour science and exposure standards. On paper, it’s the clearest sign yet of what Nikon gained from the deal. RED’s codec has long been one of the defining features of high-end digital cinema, and a version of it in a mirrorless-sized body puts Nikon in direct competition with Sony’s FX range and Canon’s smaller Cinema EOS models in the indie and documentary market.

Instead of relying on spec sheets, Nikon is running live grading sessions in DaVinci Resolve using ZR footage that was deliberately overexposed and underexposed, then recovered in post. It’s a smart way to show the format, since RAW’s main benefit is how much room it gives you when something goes wrong on set. Booth demos are still controlled environments, though. The real test is how the footage holds up in rushed, harshly lit productions, which in the Gulf usually means fighting midday sun.

For less technical buyers, the main draw is the new Z5IIC. Nikon describes it as a screen-first full-frame camera aimed at creators coming from smartphones. It uses a 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor and the EXPEED 7 processor, and records 4K video, N-Log and internal N-RAW. Offering RAW video at what appears to be the entry level of the full-frame range is notable, though Nikon hasn’t shared regional pricing, which will largely decide whether it actually attracts phone-first creators or just interests enthusiasts.

The Z6III and Z8 are also available to try, along with a wide range of NIKKOR Z lenses, so visitors can test setups across the system. Nikon is splitting its presence across two booths, one with AWPRO and one with regional distributor Grand Stores Digital, and is running photography and video talks throughout the show, which takes place from 5 to 7 October at Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City Dubai.

The bigger picture is that Nikon is no longer just a stills brand that also shoots good video. Whether working cinematographers in the region will switch from systems they’ve already invested in is still an open question, and that kind of shift usually takes a lot longer than a three-day trade show.
