ChatGPT is putting ads next to your AI images, and it’s starting now

ChatGPT’s free experience is about to get more crowded. OpenAI is adding visual display ads that will sit next to the images people ask the chatbot to generate. It is the company’s most image-heavy advertising format so far, and a clear sign that ads are becoming central to how it plans to fund its non-paying users.

The new placements start rolling out later this month, initially in the US only, with a small test group of advertisers. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labelled and will not shape the answers ChatGPT gives. That promise is easy to make at launch. It will matter more once advertiser pressure and revenue targets build up.

Ads only arrived in ChatGPT earlier this year, aimed at users on the free and cheaper subscription tiers. India was added in August. Going from text-adjacent placements to visual units is a natural next step for brands that would rather show a product than describe it. It also puts commercial content directly beside the creative output users came for. Someone generating a mock-up of their living room with a branded sofa ad beside it will see the result very differently from someone getting plain search-style links.

The timing is hard to miss. Meta recently launched Muse, a free agentic AI app positioned as a direct rival to ChatGPT. With deep-pocketed competitors handing out capable assistants for free, OpenAI needs a way to make its own free tier pay for itself. Ads do that job. They may also push casual users toward a paid plan simply to get a cleaner interface, an outcome OpenAI is unlikely to mind.

Much of the announcement is aimed at marketers, not users. OpenAI is widening its measurement partnerships to include attribution firms such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch and Kochava. It is also adding full-funnel measurement partners and working with companies including Haus and WorkMagic on location-based ad experiments. Separately, it is piloting brand suitability tools with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science so advertisers can judge whether their ads land next to content they are comfortable with.

That last piece points to the hardest problem ahead. Generated imagery is unpredictable in a way a web page is not, and brands are cautious about where their logos appear. If OpenAI eventually opens these ads to its full base of 1.2 billion weekly users worldwide, ChatGPT becomes one of the largest ad surfaces on the internet. Whether users will tolerate it still depends on how well OpenAI keeps its promise of a firewall between ads and answers.
