The iPhone Duo is almost here: here’s your totally calm, not-at-all overexcited guide to getting ready

Get Ready to Unfold Something Big

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, lands in the UAE on Friday 23 October. Pre-orders open a week earlier, on Friday 16 October at 4pm Dubai time.

This is the biggest shake-up to the iPhone since, well, the iPhone. A 7.6-inch screen that unfolds out of a passport-sized phone. Two apps side by side. A camera that can show your friends their own pose before you take the shot. It starts at AED 8,499, and with a launch this exciting, a little prep goes a long way.

Getting ready is half the fun. Here’s your game plan, from deciding if you’re a folder at heart to the first things you should try once it’s in your hands.

The Cheat Sheet

And now, the bit your wallet has been dying to ask about:

2TBAED 13,599

iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand (navy blue, taupe)AED 529

That puts the Duo proudly at the very top of the iPhone lineup. Living on the cutting edge has never looked this good.

Step 1: Figure Out If You’re a Folder

The Duo is a whole new kind of iPhone, so it’s worth thinking about how you’ll get the most out of it.

You’re a folder if you watch a lot of video on your phone, live in two apps at once (WhatsApp and a spreadsheet, Slack and email, YouTube and a group chat that won’t stop), game on the go, or simply want the most futuristic thing Apple has ever made. Closed, it’s a pocketable 5.4-inch phone with 90% of an iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area. Open, the inner display is 50% bigger than a Pro Max. That’s the whole pitch, and it’s a good one.

Camera lovers are well looked after too: a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x Telephoto, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide with macro, and 4K120 Dolby Vision video. If long-range zoom is your number one priority, the iPhone 18 Pro Max makes a great companion pick.

Step 2: Pick Your Storage (and Be Honest With Yourself)

A bigger screen means you’ll shoot, download and hoard more. 4K120 Dolby Vision video eats space fast, and offline Netflix on a 7.6-inch screen is dangerously tempting on long flights out of DXB.

  • 256GB: fine if you lean on iCloud and stream everything.
  • 512GB: the sweet spot for most people, AED 850 extra.
  • 1TB and 2TB: for creators, serious gamers and people who never delete a photo of their cat.

Step 3: Get eSIM-Ready Now, Not on Launch Day

The Duo is eSIM only, worldwide. There’s no SIM tray to pop open, so sort this before the box arrives.

  1. Check that your plan supports eSIM. Both e& and du offer it, but older or corporate plans can need a quick swap.
  2. If you’re still on a physical SIM, ask your carrier about converting to eSIM ahead of time. That way you’re good to go the moment your Duo arrives.
  3. If you’re moving from an iPhone that already uses eSIM, iOS can transfer it straight across during setup.
  4. Got a work line? Give IT a quick heads-up so everything moves over smoothly.

Step 4: Back Up, Clean Up, Trade In

Your current phone deserves a respectful send-off, and a little housekeeping makes day one buttery smooth.

  • Update your current iPhone to iOS 27 so the transfer goes cleanly.
  • Run a fresh iCloud backup (Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup).
  • Clear out the 4,000 screenshots you’ll never look at again. Your new storage will thank you.
  • Check your Apple Watch is updated, since it can unlock the Duo too.
  • Trading in? Note your old phone’s condition honestly, and don’t wipe it until the Duo is fully set up.

Step 5: Sort Your Accessories and Charging

Two gorgeous screens and a mirror-polished titanium finish deserve the right accessories.

  • Case or Folio? The AED 319 iPhone Duo Case wraps both halves and stays slim. The AED 529 Folio adds a kickstand for FaceTime, recipes and binge-watching on a cafe table. Both are MagSafe and Qi2 friendly and go on sale the same day as pre-orders.
  • Charger check: the Duo can hit 50% in around 20 minutes, but only with a 60W-capable USB-C adapter and cable. Any USB-C adapter will charge it, and a higher-wattage one gets you there fastest.
  • Wireless fans: MagSafe or Qi2 gets you to 50% in about 30 minutes, with a 35W-or-higher adapter.
  • Artists, hold that thought: Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later this year, so there’s even more to look forward to.
  • AppleCare+: extra peace of mind for your new foldable, covering drops and spills. Definitely worth a look.

Step 6: Win Pre-Order Day

Everyone wants one, and big Apple launches move fast. Here’s how to be first in line without actually standing in one.

  1. Open the Apple Store app before Friday 16 October and favourite your exact model, colour and storage.
  2. Make sure Apple Pay and your delivery address are set up and current.
  3. Set an alarm for 3:50pm on the 16th. Pre-orders go live at 4pm UAE time.
  4. Prefer to see it first? Book an in-store pickup or plan a trip to Apple Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates or Yas Mall from the 23rd.
  5. Also watching iStyle, Jumbo and Sharaf DG? Retailers often run launch bundles, so compare before you tap buy.

Step 7: Day One, the Fun List

It’s unboxed, it’s set up, and you’ve opened and closed it 47 times just to hear the magnets click. Now try these.

  • Split View: two apps side by side on an iPhone, for the first time ever. You can even open two Safari windows for some serious comparison shopping.
  • Duo Preview: shoot with the rear cameras and your subject sees themselves on the outer screen. Group photos at the Marina just got way less awkward.
  • Rear-camera selfies: use the better 48MP cameras for selfies and frame them on the outside display.
  • Smart Take: prop the Duo up and on-device AI snaps the photo when everyone’s posing. No more sprinting back from the timer.
  • Kid Cue: Peanuts animations play on the outer screen to get little ones looking at the camera. Parents, this one’s for you.
  • StandBy, upgraded: set it down and it becomes a clock, photo frame or widget hub, even when it’s not charging.
  • Siri AI: the new, much smarter Siri launches in English first, with more languages on the way.
  • Touch ID: register a couple of fingers on both hands, so unlocking works however you grab it.

The Bottom Line

The iPhone Duo is Apple doing what it does best: walking into the room and rearranging all the furniture. It’s bold, it’s beautiful, and it’s easily the most exciting iPhone in years.

Sort your eSIM, back up your phone, pick the right case and set that 3:50pm alarm on the 16th. Then sit back, because 23 October is going to feel like a holiday.

Stay tuned to Absolute Geeks for our full iPhone Duo review once we’ve folded, unfolded, (gently) dropped and put it through its paces.
