For a while, it looked like Google had quietly let the Fitbit Charge fade away. The last model arrived in 2023, and since then the company’s wearable attention has been split between the Pixel Watch line and the screen-free Fitbit Air. Newly leaked images suggest the familiar fitness band format isn’t finished after all, and it may return under a new name: Fitbit Edge.
The images reportedly show an elongated band with a compact display, physical buttons on both sides and a cluster of sensors underneath. That rear sensor layout appears to differ from the Pixel Watch 5’s, which hints at a slightly different approach to health tracking, though there’s no confirmation yet of what extra metrics, if any, it would measure.
On paper, the expected feature list reads like a deliberately trimmed smartwatch. The Edge is tipped to handle notifications, built-in GPS, an altimeter for elevation data and automatic workout detection. App support would reportedly be limited to a handful of essentials, including Google Maps, YouTube Music and Find My Phone. That restraint might be the point. Plenty of buyers want useful information on their wrist without a second phone buzzing at them all day.
Battery life is where the Edge could genuinely stand apart from Google’s watch. It’s reportedly rated for up to seven days, matching the Fitbit Air and comfortably beating the Pixel Watch 5. For sleep tracking in particular, a device you don’t need to charge every night or two remains a real practical advantage.
Compatibility could matter just as much. Like the Fitbit Air, the Edge is expected to work with both Android and iOS, while the Pixel Watch 5 remains Android-only. That leaves a door open for iPhone owners who want Google’s fitness platform without committing to an Apple Watch, a group Google has otherwise largely ignored with its premium wearables.
Leaked colourways in black, green and orange appear to line up with the Pixel 11 Pro’s Obsidian, Olive and Canyon finishes, suggesting Google wants its wearables to visually match its phones more closely.
The Edge is reportedly due this month, with an estimated price somewhere between $149 and $199. That would place it above the $99 Fitbit Air and at or slightly above where Charge models have historically sat, between $129 and $179. Whether a modest screen and a few apps justify that premium over the Air is the question Google will need to answer, especially in a budget fitness tracker market where rivals are competing hard on price.
