Marvel Studios is leaning into spooky season with its latest Avengers: Doomsday poster, and the most interesting thing about it isn’t the man in the green cloak. Revealed at Comic-Con Málaga on 3 October, the new artwork shows Doctor Doom descending a staircase in a shadowy gothic hall lit by green and yellow stained glass, with three masked figures waiting behind him. The studio paired the image with a witch-themed tagline, but stopped short of saying who these characters actually are.
They have been widely described as Latverian witches, a label tied to Doom’s fictional homeland, yet Marvel has not officially named any of them or explained their role in the story. That restraint is deliberate. The poster offers no new plot details, and its only real change from earlier marketing is how prominently the trio now sits beside the film’s central villain.
The figures aren’t entirely new, either. Costumes matching their look were on display at San Diego Comic-Con in July, which means Marvel has now teased the same mystery twice without resolving it. Whether they are loyal followers, uneasy allies or something closer to rivals remains anyone’s guess, and the internet has naturally filled that gap with theories about familiar characters from the comics. Until Marvel confirms anything, those theories are just that.
There’s a reason the witch angle feels like a smart choice. In the comics, Victor von Doom is as much a sorcerer as a scientist, and surrounding him with mystical attendants signals that Marvel may be embracing the occult side of the character rather than presenting him as a straightforward armoured tyrant. It also gives Doomsday a visual identity that separates it from the cosmic spectacle of Infinity War and Endgame.
The bigger picture is that Doomsday carries enormous weight for Marvel. Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doom, announced back in 2024, was a statement of intent from a studio trying to restore momentum after a patchy stretch of releases. The Russo brothers’ film has to set up the next phase of the multiverse saga while convincing lapsed fans that a team-up event still feels special.
With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for 18 December 2026, Marvel has roughly ten weeks of promotion left. The real question is how long it can keep teasing three masked faces before audiences start expecting answers rather than atmosphere.
