RØDE LPA1 wants to delete your mic arm from every video shot

RØDE is going after the video podcast desk with the LPA1, a low-profile studio arm now on sale for US$139. It trades the tall, swooping silhouette of a traditional broadcast boom for something that stays below the camera frame. The pitch is simple. On-camera creators want the microphone close to their mouth without a metal limb cutting through the shot, and a growing number of them are recording video first and audio second.

This is not a new idea. Low-profile arms have been around for a few years, with Elgato’s Wave Mic Arm LP among the better-known examples aimed at streamers. What RØDE brings is its own ecosystem and, on paper, more muscle. The LPA1 is rated for a 2kg payload, which the company says makes it the highest-capacity arm it has made. That figure matters more than it sounds. Heavy dynamic mics such as RØDE’s Procaster and Broadcaster, or large-diaphragm condensers like the NT1 family, can make cheaper arms sag or drift. A higher ceiling should also leave room for a shock mount, a pop filter or a small light without pushing the springs and joints to their limit.

The arm reaches 750mm horizontally. It tilts 90 degrees up and 60 degrees down, rotates a full 360 degrees and ends in a ball mount, so it can sit above or below desk level. The body is all metal. Cable channels run along the arm to hide XLR and USB leads. The bundled clamp fits desks up to 70mm thick, which covers most home setups but is worth checking if your workstation has a chunky top or an awkward lip.

The most practical detail may be the threads. The LPA1 supports 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch and 5/8-inch mounts, so it works with cameras, lights and accessories as well as microphones. That makes it a general-purpose desk arm rather than a single-purpose mic accessory. RØDE says everything needed to mount gear is included in the box.

The price puts it well above budget no-name arms but within reach of anyone already spending on a PodMic USB or NT1. What we don’t yet know is how the arm holds a 2kg load over months of daily adjustment, or how quiet the joints are when you move it mid-recording. Those two things usually decide whether a mic arm is worth the money. The black version ships worldwide now, and a white edition is listed as coming soon. For creators building a clean, camera-friendly setup, the real test will be whether the LPA1 disappears from the frame as neatly as it does from the spec sheet.
