Dubai’s 17-day gaming festival returns with a new Games Week twist

Dubai has locked in dates for the next Dubai Esports & Games Festival, and the 2027 edition will be longer and broader than the last. The sixth DEF runs for 17 days, from 9 to 25 April 2027, and the city is using its biggest home-grown gaming event to push its case as a regional industry hub, not just a place to host tournaments.

The festival is organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, the arm of the Department of Economy and Tourism that also runs the city’s shopping festivals. It launched in 2022, and each year it has tried to bring together three groups: players and families looking for a weekend out, competitive esports communities, and businesses. The 2027 programme adds a new Dubai Games Week, along with what organisers describe as enhanced education, esports and industry-focused activity spread across the city.

GameExpo is still the centrepiece. It returns to Dubai World Trade Centre from 23 to 25 April and closes the festival with three days of competitions, community events and industry sessions. Organisers say the programme will be expanded but haven’t given details. There is no word yet on headline tournaments, participating publishers, ticket prices or how the new Games Week will differ from what GameExpo already offers.

The attendance numbers give some sense of scale. DEF 2026 drew more than 43,000 visitors and paid out AED 1 million in prizes across its gaming, esports and cosplay competitions. That is a respectable showing for a young event. It is still a long way from the region’s heavyweight, Saudi Arabia’s Esports World Cup, which offers far bigger prize pools and draws global attention. Dubai seems to be taking a different route, focusing on community, education and business matchmaking rather than trying to outspend Riyadh.

That focus shows in the timing. Sponsor and exhibitor registration is already open, eight months ahead of opening day, so the organisers are clearly looking for commercial partners before they reveal much to fans. Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, tied the event to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the emirate’s goal of becoming a global hub for gaming and digital innovation.

That ambition is familiar across the Gulf. Whether DEF can deliver on it depends on things that haven’t been announced: which studios, teams and publishers commit to the event. It also depends on whether an extra week of programming brings real depth or just a longer calendar. The partner list over the coming months should answer that.
