Google has found another everyday task for Gemini to take off your hands: actually calling people. A new experimental Pixel 11 feature called Call for Me allows Google’s AI to place routine calls to businesses, navigate automated menus and speak to whoever eventually answers.
Call for Me is rolling out through the public beta of the Phone by Google app, although availability is currently fairly limited. Google is starting with the Pixel 11 series in the US, and access requires a paid Gemini subscription.
The concept is simple enough. Instead of calling a restaurant, salon or shop yourself, you tell Gemini what you need done. Call for Me can then handle tasks such as changing an appointment or reservation, checking whether something is in stock, or asking a business to hold an item.
Gemini takes care of the particularly irritating parts too. It can work its way through automated phone menus and sit on hold before talking to an employee once someone finally picks up. The AI introduces itself during the conversation rather than pretending to be the Pixel owner.
Google isn’t quite ready to let Gemini loose on businesses completely unsupervised, though. While Call for Me is speaking, users can follow the conversation through a live transcript and jump into the call themselves whenever necessary. That makes plenty of sense while the feature is experimental — changing a dinner reservation is convenient right up until an AI misunderstands the date.
Call for Me expands Google’s increasingly automated approach to the humble phone call. Pixel devices already offer Hold for Me, which waits on hold on your behalf, and Direct My Call, which makes complicated automated phone menus easier to navigate. The new feature goes significantly further by letting AI participate in the actual conversation.
The bigger question is how comfortable businesses — and their employees — will be receiving calls from AI agents instead of customers. If these systems become common, routine customer-service conversations could increasingly become exchanges between a human employee and somebody else’s Gemini assistant.
There’s no confirmation yet that Call for Me will expand beyond the Pixel 11 family. Its reliance on Gemini Intelligence also means older Pixel hardware may not necessarily qualify if Google eventually broadens availability.
For now, Pixel 11 owners in the US willing to join the Phone app beta can get an early look at a future where making a phone call could become something your phone does literally, rather than figuratively.
