Apple Intelligence is becoming a little more expensive in a currency iPhone owners can’t easily replenish: storage. With iOS 27, Apple’s most capable AI features can require up to 14GB of free space on newer iPhones, compared with the 8GB requirement that applies to most compatible models.
The higher storage requirement applies to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Other iPhones capable of running Apple Intelligence continue to require up to 8GB for the AI features included with iOS 27.
That difference comes down to on-device AI models rather than Apple arbitrarily making its software larger. The newer devices support two capabilities unavailable on other compatible iPhones: more sophisticated Siri AI voice customisation, including control over expressivity and pace, and improved dictation accuracy.
Both rely on a more powerful model running locally on the iPhone, which means additional model data has to live on the device. It’s one of the less visible costs of the industry’s move towards on-device generative AI.
Apple Intelligence originally arrived in 2024 with an emphasis on balancing local processing with cloud-based computation. Running models directly on an iPhone can offer advantages around responsiveness and privacy, but those models need somewhere to live. As their capabilities grow, storage is increasingly part of that equation.
The jump from 8GB to as much as 14GB is unlikely to trouble owners with plenty of unused capacity, but it could become more noticeable on devices that are already crowded with photos, videos, games and downloaded media. Unlike an app that can simply be offloaded when unused, system-level AI features make storage management a broader consideration for anyone wanting the complete iOS experience.
It also highlights an emerging hardware divide within Apple’s AI strategy. Installing iOS 27 doesn’t necessarily mean every compatible iPhone gets identical Apple Intelligence capabilities. Newer hardware can run more advanced on-device models, while older supported devices receive a different subset of features with a smaller storage footprint.
For Apple, that’s the trade-off as Siri and Apple Intelligence become more capable. More processing on the device can make AI faster and less dependent on remote servers, but increasingly sophisticated models demand additional resources. Storage capacity is now joining memory and processor performance as another specification that can determine exactly how much AI an iPhone can handle.
