Xiaomi is bringing its rear-display experiment back for another flagship generation. The company has confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will launch in China later this month, with an official teaser revealing a familiar camera-heavy design and another screen built into the back of the phone.
The teaser offers only a brief look at what Xiaomi has planned. The rear display shows the word “Generating,” potentially pointing towards some form of generative AI functionality. Xiaomi has not explained what that means yet, however, so suggestions that users will be able to create AI-generated wallpapers or other content directly for the secondary screen remain unconfirmed.
More concrete is Xiaomi’s decision to keep investing in the rear display itself. Rather than abandoning the feature after the Xiaomi 17 Pro generation, the company appears to be treating it as an increasingly important part of its Pro-series identity.
Xiaomi claims users interacted with app cards on the previous generation’s rear screen more than four million times per day, while over 3.5 million wallpapers were added daily. Those figures come directly from Xiaomi and cannot independently tell us how frequently individual owners actually use the feature, but they do at least provide some explanation for why the company believes the second display deserves another generation.
The Xiaomi 17 Pro’s rear screen also became more capable after launch through software updates, gaining features including live wallpapers and interactive tools. That progression matters because secondary displays on conventional smartphones can easily become expensive novelties unless manufacturers find practical reasons for owners to keep using them.
Visually, Xiaomi isn’t starting again from scratch. The Xiaomi 18 Pro teaser shows a wide horizontal camera island containing a Leica-branded triple-camera system, with the secondary display occupying much of the surrounding module. The result appears broadly similar to the Xiaomi 17 Pro rather than a dramatic redesign.
Leaks suggest some smaller changes may still be coming. Tipster Digital Chat Station has claimed that Xiaomi will reduce the bezels surrounding the rear display, reposition the front punch-hole camera and introduce another physical button on the phone’s frame. Earlier reports have also suggested a larger secondary display with a privacy feature comparable in concept to privacy-screen technology introduced on Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra. None of those details have been officially confirmed yet.
The bigger question is whether Xiaomi can turn the rear screen from an eye-catching flagship differentiator into something genuinely useful. Secondary displays have appeared in various forms across smartphones before, but adding another panel inevitably raises questions about cost, durability, power consumption and whether its functionality justifies the extra hardware.
