Nikon’s nine new cinema lenses reveal its bigger RED ambitions

Nikon is pushing deeper into professional filmmaking with a new family of large-format cinema primes. The company is developing nine lenses under the NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV banner, including a confirmed 50mm T1.9 model, as it continues to bring Nikon and RED technologies closer together.

The most significant detail is the format these lenses are being designed to cover. Nikon says the T1.9 VV series will be its first NIKKOR lens family with an image circle large enough for RED’s V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor, which measures 40.96 x 21.60mm and extends beyond conventional full-frame dimensions. That immediately positions the lenses for high-end cinema cameras rather than simply adapting photography-oriented Z glass for video work.

All nine lenses are planned around a T1.9 maximum aperture, giving cinematographers a consistent aperture target across the range. Nikon has not yet disclosed the other eight focal lengths, detailed optical specifications, physical dimensions, pricing or availability, so there is still plenty missing before the series can be properly assessed as a working cinema set.

More interestingly, Nikon says the lenses will incorporate a high-precision autofocus mechanism. Autofocus has traditionally played a much smaller role in dedicated cinema lens design than it has in photography and hybrid video, where manual focus and dedicated focus-pulling systems remain common. Building sophisticated autofocus into a cinema-focused prime series could make the lenses particularly interesting for smaller crews, gimbal work and productions where maintaining focus on moving subjects without a dedicated focus puller is useful.

The NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV project also provides a clearer indication of where Nikon intends to take its relationship with RED. Rather than treating its 2024 acquisition of RED Digital Cinema as an isolated move into professional video, Nikon is increasingly showing how its optical and camera businesses could overlap. Developing NIKKOR lenses specifically around RED’s Vista Vision-sized sensor is one of the more tangible examples of that strategy so far.

Nikon describes the new range as combining cinema-grade rendering with the practical requirements of professional production, although those claims will need to wait for finished hardware and independent testing. Cinema lenses are judged on considerably more than sharpness: focus breathing, flare characteristics, consistency between focal lengths, mechanical operation, colour matching and handling can all matter just as much.

For now, the announcement is primarily a development roadmap rather than a product launch. Nikon has confirmed the nine-lens strategy, T1.9 aperture, VV coverage, autofocus and the 50mm model, but it has left many of the details filmmakers will care about unanswered. Those specifications — and especially pricing — will determine whether NIKKOR Z CINEMA becomes a serious new option for established cinema crews or remains a more specialised extension of the growing Nikon-RED ecosystem.
