Point Break is heading back to the screen, but this time the surfing, crime and undercover drama will have considerably more room to breathe. AMC and Canal+ have ordered an eight-episode television series based on the cult 1991 action film, with production expected to begin in early 2027.
Rather than retelling Kathryn Bigelow’s movie or bringing back its surviving characters for another nostalgia-driven sequel, the series will move the concept into the present day. A new group of criminals inspired by the original Ex-Presidents emerges, prompting the FBI to recruit a mysterious former professional surfer to infiltrate the crew.
It is a familiar setup for anyone who remembers the original. Keanu Reeves played FBI agent Johnny Utah, who went undercover among surfers while investigating a string of bank robberies committed by criminals wearing masks of former US presidents. Patrick Swayze starred opposite Reeves as Bodhi, the charismatic surfer and adrenaline addict at the centre of the gang.
That basic conflict between law enforcement, extreme sports and the seductive appeal of the people being investigated remains one of Point Break’s defining ideas. Moving it to television could give the undercover relationship more space than a feature film, although much will depend on whether the new series can establish an identity beyond recreating the Utah-Bodhi dynamic.
Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Kalstein previously worked on Treadstone and NCIS: Los Angeles, while Rogers’ credits include Sugar and AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire.
The production brings together Alcon Television Group, AMC Studios and StudioCanal. AMC and AMC+ will carry the series in the US, while Canal+ is set to distribute it across France and parts of its pay-TV network in Europe, Africa and Asia. StudioCanal will handle international sales and distribution outside the US and Canada.
No actors have been announced, and there is currently no indication that Reeves will return as Johnny Utah. That makes this less of a conventional legacy sequel and more of an attempt to build a new story around the Point Break premise and the mythology of the Ex-Presidents.
It will not be Hollywood’s first attempt to revive the property. A 2015 Point Break remake starring Luke Bracey and Édgar Ramírez shifted much of the emphasis toward increasingly elaborate extreme-sports sequences. The television project was first revealed as being in development in December 2025, with the eight-episode order now moving it closer to production.
There is no premiere date yet, which is unsurprising given that filming is not planned until early 2027. UAE availability also remains unconfirmed. Canal+ having an international footprint does not automatically mean the series will receive a local streaming or broadcast release.
The bigger question is whether Point Break can work without the specific chemistry that made Bigelow’s film endure. The premise is certainly adaptable, but three decades of action movies have borrowed heavily from it. A modern series will need more than surfing, robberies and nostalgia to make the Ex-Presidents worth chasing again.
