Twitch viewers watched a staggering 8.6 billion gaming hours in 2026

Twitch viewers have spent more than 8.6 billion hours watching gaming content during the first eight months of 2026, according to the platform’s latest State of Gaming report. The figure covers January 1 through September 1 and underlines just how firmly watching games has become part of gaming itself rather than a side activity reserved for esports tournaments and major launches.

League of Legends remains Twitch’s most-watched game of 2026 so far, with Counter-Strike, GTA V and Valorant also among the platform’s biggest titles. Twitch’s report says its five most-watched games collectively generated nearly 1.7 billion hours viewed, showing that established multiplayer games continue to command enormous audiences despite an increasingly crowded release calendar.

There is a notable inconsistency in the information supplied by Twitch, however. The accompanying outreach material lists Dota 2 as the fifth most-watched game, while the full report summary provided alongside it instead names World of Warcraft and highlights Echo_esports, Maximum and Metashi12 among its leading streamers. Until Twitch clarifies the discrepancy, the identity of the fifth-ranked title should be treated cautiously.

More interesting than another year of familiar multiplayer giants dominating the charts is the growth happening further down Twitch’s gaming ecosystem. Channels using the indie game tag generated 348 million hours watched, representing a 51% increase compared with the same January-to-September period in 2025. Twitch points to games including Meccha Chameleon, Slay the Spire 2 and Big Walk as contributors to that growth.

Horror also continues to perform strongly as spectator entertainment. Twitch says the genre generated 287 million viewing hours, while content carrying the Horror tag reached 93 million hours, up 6% year over year. Sandbox games were substantially larger at 831 million hours watched, while games built around creatures and companions accounted for 142 million hours.

Twitch’s Drops system offers another indication of how the platform is trying to turn passive viewing into something closer to participation. Drops-enabled streams accumulated 1.6 billion hours watched, up 46%, while Twitch ran more than 7,500 Drops campaigns. Around 40 million users claimed Drops during the measured period, according to the company.

The report also highlights creators moving beyond conventional gameplay streams. Middle Eastern creator sultan_feasts, for example, has been producing cooking broadcasts inspired by recipes from games including World of Warcraft and The Witcher. Similar creator-led formats elsewhere have ranged from Minecraft events to elaborate real-world livestreamed experiences.

Twitch’s numbers are internally sourced, so they provide a useful picture of activity on Twitch rather than an independent measurement of livestreaming as a whole. Still, 8.6 billion gaming hours in eight months — alongside rapid growth for indie content and reward-driven streams — suggests the competition for gamers’ attention increasingly extends far beyond the games themselves.
