Apple has officially announced AirPods 5, and this generation is focused on improving the open-ear formula rather than turning the regular AirPods into another pair of AirPods Pro. The headline upgrade is stronger Active Noise Cancellation, backed by redesigned acoustics, next-generation Adaptive EQ and improvements to Transparency mode.

Apple says AirPods 5 can remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. There are actually two versions this time: standard AirPods 5 cost AED 539, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost AED 629 and add several worthwhile extras, including longer battery life, wireless charging and on-stem volume controls.

Both models are available to pre-order now, with retail availability beginning September 18.

Active Noise Cancellation gets a serious upgrade

Getting effective ANC from an open-ear design is considerably trickier than doing it with earbuds that physically seal the ear canal. Apple is nevertheless claiming its latest model delivers best-in-class ANC among open-ear wireless headphones, based on its own testing against bestselling competitors.

AirPods 5 use a new multiport acoustic architecture alongside updated computational audio algorithms to reduce up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That’s a substantial claimed improvement, although real-world testing will ultimately determine how noticeable the difference is on flights, public transport and busy streets.

The advantage remains the AirPods’ open-ear design. Some people simply don’t enjoy silicone ear tips or the isolated sensation produced by sealed earbuds, making improved ANC particularly interesting for anyone who wants noise reduction without moving to AirPods Pro.

Transparency and Adaptive Audio get smarter

Noise cancellation isn’t the only listening mode Apple has worked on. AirPods 5 introduce an improved Transparency mode designed to reproduce nearby voices and environmental sounds more naturally.

Adaptive Audio continues to sit between the two extremes, dynamically blending Transparency and ANC according to the surrounding environment. Conversation Awareness can also automatically lower media volume when the wearer begins speaking to someone.

These aren’t necessarily features you’ll think about every time you put the earbuds in, and that’s arguably the point. The best adaptive audio features should quietly figure out what’s happening around you without turning every trip to the supermarket into a settings-management simulator.

Apple has reworked the sound system

Inside AirPods 5 is a new multiport acoustic architecture inspired by AirPods Pro 3. It’s paired with next-generation Adaptive EQ, with Apple promising richer and more detailed audio across a wider variety of ear shapes.

That last part is especially important for open-ear earbuds. Without a silicone tip creating a consistent seal, differences in ear geometry can have a substantial effect on how earbuds sound. Adaptive EQ attempts to compensate for those variations rather than assuming everyone’s ears rolled off the same factory production line.

Personalized Spatial Audio is supported as well, using a personalized profile created with a compatible iPhone’s TrueDepth camera. Apple says the redesigned acoustic system should make Spatial Audio more immersive and dynamic with compatible content.

The AED 629 version gets some important extras

The biggest wrinkle with AirPods 5 is that spending another AED 90 gets you more than a different charging case. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case also introduce on-stem volume control to Apple’s open-ear AirPods for the first time.

Users can swipe up or down on the stem to change volume instead of reaching for their iPhone or asking Siri. It’s a small addition, but also the sort of obvious everyday convenience that quickly becomes difficult to live without once you’ve used it.

The upgraded charging case supports USB-C, Qi-compatible wireless chargers and Apple Watch chargers. Standard AirPods 5 don’t receive these wireless charging capabilities, making the AED 629 model the more feature-complete package.

Battery life improves with the Wireless Charging Case

Apple says AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case provide up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled, an improvement of one hour over AirPods 4 with ANC.

Total listening time reaches up to 22 hours with the charging case while using Active Noise Cancellation. Actual battery life will naturally vary according to volume, features and usage.

It’s not an enormous endurance revolution, but another hour from the earbuds themselves is meaningful. Wireless earbuds are at their least impressive when the low-battery warning appears halfway through a journey, so improvements to single-charge runtime generally matter more than heroic total-case numbers.

Siri still understands the nod

AirPods 5 continue Apple’s head-gesture controls for Siri, allowing users to respond without speaking. That’s particularly useful when answering Siri aloud would be awkward or when you’re somewhere noisy enough that talking to your earbuds feels like negotiating with a malfunctioning starship computer.

Full functionality requires AirPods 5 to be paired with an Apple device running the latest operating-system software. Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 27 on September 14 for supported devices and languages, while Siri AI begins rolling out in beta for English on the same date.

Live Translation is also supported when AirPods 5 are paired with compatible Apple Intelligence devices running the required software and firmware, although language and regional availability varies.

AirPods 5 are tougher too

Apple has also improved resistance to dust, sweat and water, making AirPods 5 better suited to workouts and everyday use.

The environmental changes extend to their construction. Apple says AirPods 5 contain 40 percent recycled material overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. The Wireless Charging Case uses 70 percent recycled plastic, while the product’s paper packaging is entirely fiber-based.

Those changes aren’t likely to be the reason anyone buys a new pair of AirPods, but increased physical durability absolutely matters for something destined to spend its life bouncing between pockets, bags, desks and gym sessions.

AirPods 5 UAE price and release date

AirPods 5 are priced at AED 539 in the UAE, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost AED 629. Both models are available to pre-order now and will arrive in stores on Friday, September 18.

That AED 90 difference is particularly interesting because the upgraded model doesn’t merely add wireless charging. It also provides longer battery life and the new stem-based volume control.

For anyone already spending more than AED 500 on AirPods, that relatively small premium could make the AED 629 version considerably more attractive. The cheaper model still gets the fundamental AirPods 5 improvements, however, including upgraded ANC, the redesigned acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ.
