Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and this year’s Pro refresh goes considerably further than the usual faster-chip-and-better-camera routine. The new flagships introduce a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the 2nm A20 Pro chip, redesigned vapor-chamber cooling, longer battery life and a smaller Dynamic Island.

There’s also a much stronger emphasis on professional photography and video. Apple is bringing manual camera controls directly into the Camera app, introducing its new Reference Image authenticity technology and expanding Photographic Styles and video capabilities.

In the UAE, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at AED 5,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at AED 5,499. Pre-orders open September 12, with general availability beginning September 18.

Variable aperture comes to the iPhone

The biggest camera change is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera, which introduces variable aperture to an iPhone for the first time. Apple uses six laser-cut aperture blades that can physically adjust the lens aperture depending on lighting conditions and the desired depth of field.

The system can operate automatically, but Apple is also giving photographers four aperture settings that can be selected manually through the Camera app. In practical terms, this gives the camera more control over how much of an image remains in focus while also helping it adapt to different lighting conditions.

Apple has paired the new camera hardware with an updated computational imaging pipeline and a new sensor designed to improve detail and low-light image quality. Photographic Styles are expanding too, with new texture and grain controls for users who want greater influence over the final look of their photos.

Apple adds proper Pro camera controls

The iPhone 18 Pro isn’t simply getting new camera hardware. Apple is introducing a customizable Pro controls interface that brings several traditional photography settings directly into the default Camera app.

Users can manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram can be displayed to monitor exposure. For photographers who previously relied on specialist third-party camera apps to access this level of control, that’s a meaningful expansion of Apple’s native camera experience.

Video receives several upgrades as well. Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture to footage recorded at up to 60fps, while Time-lapse supports recording in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix also gains updated algorithms for improving voice quality and isolating music.

Apple Reference Image takes aim at manipulated photography

Apple is also introducing Reference Image, a new opt-in feature designed to help establish whether a photograph has been modified.

When shooting in Reference mode, the iPhone 18 Pro’s Main camera captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute uses to create an unalterable reference image. That reference can be viewed alongside the regular image in Photos, essentially providing a digital negative that can be compared against the finished photograph.

Apple is pairing the system with image metadata and planned SynthID support for identifying AI-generated or AI-edited imagery. APIs will also be available across iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27 so third-party apps can support Reference Images. The feature won’t be available for capture in China or the EU at launch.

A20 Pro moves to 2nm

Powering both phones is Apple’s new A20 Pro, manufactured using a 2nm process. The chip features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro.

Apple claims the new GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation. There’s also a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 total cores, delivering what Apple says is twice the AI processing capability of A19 Pro. As usual, we’ll need independent benchmarks before treating those figures as anything beyond Apple’s own performance claims.

The increased AI horsepower is intended for computational photography and more demanding on-device models, among other workloads. With mobile silicon increasingly being designed around local AI processing, the Neural Engine is becoming just as important to Apple’s chip strategy as the traditional CPU and GPU arms race.

Apple has redesigned the cooling system too

Raw performance isn’t particularly useful if the phone gets hot and has to throttle five minutes later, so Apple has also redesigned the thermal architecture around A20 Pro.

The chip uses new packaging inspired by Apple’s M-series silicon, placing the silicon die alongside the memory rather than leaving the memory in the chip’s thermal path. This allows A20 Pro to connect directly to a next-generation vapor chamber.

Apple says the vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous-generation system in the iPhone 17 Pro and enables up to 40 percent higher sustained performance. That could be particularly relevant for demanding games, video processing and intensive AI workloads where maintaining performance matters more than posting one spectacular benchmark score.

Battery life gets a substantial boost

Battery life is another major focus this generation, particularly on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple’s eSIM-only models are rated for up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.

The UAE will receive eSIM-only versions of both phones. Apple has used the space previously occupied by the physical SIM hardware for a larger battery, which it says provides two additional hours of video playback compared with models retaining physical SIM hardware.

Charging gets faster as well. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes with compatible wired charging equipment, or 50 percent wirelessly in approximately 30 minutes. On the Pro Max, Apple claims five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback.

A smaller Dynamic Island arrives

The Dynamic Island isn’t disappearing, but Apple has managed to make it smaller while increasing what it can display.

The redesigned version can show three Live Activities simultaneously while continuing to house the technology required for Face ID. It’s not the all-screen iPhone some people have been waiting for, but reducing the footprint while making the feature more useful is a sensible evolution.

Both models also receive Apple’s new N1 wireless networking chip, bringing support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. A new C2 cellular modem replaces the previous modem system, with Apple claiming faster uploads than C1X alongside 15 percent lower energy consumption.

iOS 27 and Siri AI arrive alongside the new iPhones

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will ship with iOS 27, which introduces interface refinements, additional Liquid Glass customization and expanded parental controls.

Apple Intelligence will be available with iOS 27 from September 14 on compatible devices and supported languages. Siri AI will also begin rolling out in beta on the same day for devices configured in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support scheduled for October. Availability of individual features will continue to vary by language and region.

iOS 27 also introduces iPhone Handoff, allowing supported users to switch between two iPhones using the same phone number. The feature will initially be limited to supported carriers, including T-Mobile in the US and Telekom Germany.

Four colours and up to 2TB of storage

Apple is offering the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy finish. Storage starts at 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations also available.

A new accessory lineup accompanies the phones, including Silicone, TechWoven and Clear MagSafe cases alongside FineWoven Wallets, Crossbody Straps and a new Wrist Strap. UAE pricing starts at AED 219 for Clear and Silicone MagSafe cases, while the TechWoven Case and Crossbody Strap cost AED 269.

The Wrist Strap costs AED 119 and can also be used with compatible AirPods models. Because apparently even your iPhone accessories now need their own accessory ecosystem.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max UAE price and release date

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at AED 5,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at AED 5,499. Both models start with 256GB of storage and will also be available with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities.

Pre-orders in the UAE begin at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, with the phones arriving on Friday, September 18. Apple Trade In will offer between AED 640 and AED 3,260 in credit for eligible iPhone 13 or newer devices, depending on the model and applicable conditions.
