Anthropic is making Claude Code considerably less intrusive on the Mac by allowing its computer-use capabilities to operate in the background. The change means Claude can interact with applications and complete tasks without effectively taking possession of the user’s screen and cursor while it works.
Background computer use is currently available through Claude Code on macOS for Anthropic’s Pro and Max subscribers. The capability builds on Claude’s existing ability to operate a computer, but changes one of the biggest practical limitations of AI agents: sharing the same desktop with the human who asked them to do something.
Computer-use agents are intended to go beyond answering questions or generating text. Instead, they can interact with graphical interfaces, navigating applications and performing actions that would ordinarily require someone sitting in front of the computer. That opens the door to longer workflows where an AI assistant can potentially handle repetitive tasks rather than merely explaining how to perform them.
The problem is that traditional computer-use implementations can become disruptive. If an AI agent needs control of the mouse and visible desktop, the computer becomes considerably less useful to its owner until the automated task finishes. Background operation changes that equation by separating the agent’s work from whatever the user is currently doing.
That distinction could prove more important than another incremental improvement in model intelligence. An AI agent capable of completing a task autonomously is useful; one capable of doing it while you continue working is much closer to the kind of persistent digital assistant AI companies have been promising.
Anthropic is not alone in moving toward this model. OpenAI introduced background computer-use capabilities on the Mac earlier in 2026, putting pressure on competing AI coding and agent platforms to make autonomous tasks less disruptive. The competition is increasingly shifting from which chatbot produces the smartest answer to which agent can reliably complete useful work with the least supervision.
Claude Code’s background computer use also reinforces how quickly coding assistants are expanding beyond the terminal and text editor. Tools that began primarily as ways to generate, explain and modify code are increasingly being positioned as agents capable of navigating broader desktop workflows.
There are obvious considerations around control and trust. Allowing an AI system to operate applications independently raises questions about permissions, unintended actions and how clearly users can review what happened while the agent was working. Background execution makes the experience more convenient, but it also makes visibility and safeguards more important.
For now, Anthropic is limiting this implementation to macOS and its paid Pro and Max customers, with no broader platform availability detailed in the supplied information.
The larger significance is less about Claude gaining another Mac feature and more about where desktop AI is heading. The most useful computer agents may eventually be the ones users barely notice working — provided they can be trusted not to make a mess while nobody is watching.
