GTA 6’s romance system is already causing real relationship drama

GTA 6 isn’t even out yet and it may already be causing relationship drama. A surprisingly intense social media debate has erupted around the game’s romance system, with some partners arguing that maintaining Jason and Lucia’s virtual relationship crosses into real-life cheating territory.

Yes, seriously.

The discussion follows Rockstar Games’ extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, which revealed considerably more detail about the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia. Players can develop their bond through dates, text messages, shared criminal activities and smaller affectionate interactions such as holding hands. Some TikTok users have responded by saying they wouldn’t be comfortable with their partners participating in that side of the game, with a few going as far as describing it as cheating.

There is one rather important detail getting lost in the outrage: Rockstar says engaging deeply with the relationship system is optional.

Jason and Lucia begin the story interested in each other, but players decide how much they want to develop that connection. Ignoring the romance mechanics apparently won’t destroy their partnership; they will still support one another when the story demands it. Players who actively nurture the relationship, however, can shape them into a closer couple.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson describes the mechanic as giving players a sense of responsibility for Jason and Lucia as a unit. That makes it sound less like the player personally dating a fictional character and more like managing the relationship between two protagonists — a distinction that probably won’t end the TikTok arguments.

The controversy becomes stranger when compared with gaming history. The Sims has allowed players to build romances, marriages and entire virtual families for decades. RPGs including Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate and countless others have made player-directed romance a major component of their storytelling without generally prompting arguments that interacting with those systems constitutes infidelity.

GTA itself isn’t new to virtual relationships either. Grand Theft Auto 4 allowed Niko Bellic to date characters, while San Andreas became infamous for the unused “Hot Coffee” content discovered within the game’s files. The resulting controversy led to an Adults Only rating, recalls and legal problems after modders restored access to material Rockstar had cut.

That history makes another question surrounding GTA 6 particularly interesting: exactly how far Jason and Lucia’s interactive relationship can go.

Rockstar has not confirmed whether players can initiate sex outside scripted story sequences. Trailers indicate that sexual intimacy exists within their relationship, but Nelson has only said that physical intimacy is an important aspect the development team wants to handle appropriately. Claims that GTA 6 definitely includes player-triggered sex therefore remain unconfirmed.

What is confirmed is that Rockstar has made Jason and Lucia’s relationship unusually interactive, turning romance into another system players can choose to engage with rather than leaving it entirely to cutscenes.

Whether pressing a button to send Lucia a text counts as cheating on your actual partner is something Rockstar’s developers probably never expected to become one of GTA 6’s pre-release controversies. The internet, inevitably, had other plans.
