Rockstar finally answers the biggest GTA 6 generative AI question

Rockstar Games has drawn a surprisingly firm line around one of gaming’s most contentious technologies: Grand Theft Auto 6 was not developed using generative AI.

The confirmation came from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, who was asked directly about generative AI during a conversation with Kinda Funny Games following a visit to the developer’s Edinburgh studio. Nelson’s answer was simply “No,” leaving little ambiguity about Rockstar’s position on GTA 6’s production.

That short response carries more weight than it might appear. Generative AI has become an increasingly visible part of the games industry, with publishers and technology companies exploring its potential for everything from asset creation to development tools. At the same time, its use remains controversial among developers and players because of questions surrounding training data, creative ownership, employment and whether generated material should replace work traditionally produced by artists, writers and other creators.

GTA 6 is an especially interesting test case because few games operate at anything close to its scale. Rockstar has spent years building its next open-world blockbuster, meaning any substantial reliance on generative AI would have immediately become part of the wider debate over whether increasingly expensive games can — or should — use automation to reduce development workloads.

Instead, Rockstar appears to have taken the conventional route, at least where generative AI is concerned. That does not mean GTA 6 was produced without sophisticated technology or automation; modern game development relies heavily on tools designed to accelerate complex production tasks. Nelson’s statement specifically addresses generative AI rather than every form of AI-assisted or automated development technology.

The distinction matters. “AI” has become an increasingly loose umbrella term, frequently applied to technologies that have existed in game development for decades. Generative AI is a more specific category, typically referring to systems capable of producing new text, imagery, audio, code or other content based on learned patterns.

Rockstar’s confirmation arrives as GTA 6 enters the final stretch before its scheduled November 19, 2026 release. The company recently showed a 26-minute Extended Look, giving players a substantially deeper view of the game ahead of launch.

Nelson also reportedly confirmed that GTA 6 itself will not feature microtransactions. That is notable given how important recurring spending became to GTA Online, although it does not establish what Rockstar may eventually do with GTA 6’s expected online component.

For now, Rockstar has removed one major question surrounding GTA 6 from the conversation. With generative AI spreading rapidly across creative industries, one of gaming’s largest productions is notable precisely because Rockstar says it managed without it.
