RØDE is expanding its desktop creator hardware lineup with the DS3, a new weighted studio arm designed to handle heavier microphones, cameras, lights and other accessories without relying on a traditional desk clamp.
The DS3 succeeds the company’s DS2 and increases payload capacity to 1.5kg, giving it enough headroom for larger equipment such as broadcast-style XLR microphones, including RØDE’s own PodMic, as well as cameras and lighting gear. That broader load support is likely to be the biggest practical difference for users whose setups have outgrown lighter desktop stands.
Rather than clamping onto the edge of a desk, the DS3 uses a weighted base that can be placed anywhere on a flat surface. It is a less permanent approach than conventional boom arms and should appeal to users who frequently rearrange their workspaces, although the trade-off is that a weighted stand still occupies physical desk space. RØDE says the redesigned base improves stability while keeping the footprint relatively compact.
A built-in ball head handles positioning, with a central locking mechanism used to secure equipment at the chosen angle. RØDE also says the mechanism has been engineered for quiet movement, something that matters more than it might seem during live broadcasts, podcasts or video recording sessions where stand noise can easily make its way into a microphone.
The DS3 also includes some smaller quality-of-life improvements aimed at tidier creator desks. Integrated cable clips provide routing for USB and XLR cables, while the base incorporates an isolation pad intended to reduce vibration. The material changes depending on the finish: the black version uses silicone above and below the base, while the upcoming white model uses natural cork.
Compatibility extends beyond microphones. RØDE includes 3/8-inch, 1/4-inch and 5/8-inch thread adapters in the box, covering many common mounting standards used across microphones, cameras, lights and content-creation accessories. That makes the DS3 less of a dedicated mic stand and more of a general-purpose desktop mounting system.
The launch reflects a wider shift in creator hardware, where the boundaries between podcasting, livestreaming and video production equipment have become increasingly blurred. A single desk may now need to support a microphone, compact camera, key light and monitor accessories, so flexible mounting hardware has become a more important part of the setup than it was when boom arms were primarily audio accessories.
The RØDE DS3 is available now in black for US$109, with worldwide shipping. A white version is expected to follow, although RØDE has not given a specific release date.
At that price, the DS3 sits firmly in the premium desktop accessory category, but its appeal will depend less on the arm itself than on whether users value the freedom of a weighted, clamp-free setup enough to give up some desk real estate.
