Formula 1 confirms Abu Dhabi preparations for December 2026 finale

Abu Dhabi is moving ahead with preparations for the 2026 Formula 1 season finale, with Yas Marina Circuit set to host the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from December 3 to 6.

The race will once again close out the Formula 1 World Championship, continuing a role Abu Dhabi has held regularly since joining the calendar in 2009. Formula One President and CEO Stefano Domenicali has said preparations are progressing as planned, with the championship maintaining its current schedule for the final round.

For Abu Dhabi, the event is now about considerably more than the race itself. The Grand Prix has developed into one of the emirate’s largest annual international events, combining motorsport with concerts, hospitality, tourism and entertainment across Yas Island.

That broader positioning has become increasingly important as Formula 1 expands its global audience and race weekends compete not only on sporting significance, but also on the scale of the surrounding experience. Abu Dhabi has leaned heavily into that model, using the season-ending slot to attract travelling fans while giving visitors reasons to stay beyond the track action.

Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Under-Secretary of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, has pointed to the race as part of the emirate’s wider strategy to attract major international events and support tourism and hospitality. Ethara CEO Saif Rashid Al Noaimi has also said preparations are advancing in coordination with Formula 1 and other local partners.

The December 2026 weekend is scheduled to run across four days at Yas Marina Circuit. As the final event of the season, the sporting stakes could be significant if either championship remains undecided, although that will depend entirely on how the 2026 campaign develops.

The race also arrives during a particularly notable season for Formula 1. The 2026 championship introduces a major new technical era for the sport, with revised chassis and power unit regulations reshaping both the cars and the competitive order. That could make the closing rounds especially important as teams adapt to one of Formula 1’s biggest regulation changes in years.

The wider calendar has also seen adjustments. Bahrain’s 2026 Grand Prix is set to be staged at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, subject to final agreements and official approval. The arrangement keeps Bahrain’s place on the schedule while bringing Formula 1 back to Sepang.

Against that changing backdrop, Abu Dhabi remains one of the more stable fixtures at the end of the calendar. Its position as the finale gives the event a built-in level of attention, but the challenge will be maintaining that relevance as Formula 1 continues to add destinations and raise expectations around race-weekend entertainment.

With the 2026 title race eventually set to conclude under the lights at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi will again have the final word on a Formula 1 season shaped by new regulations, shifting venues and an increasingly competitive global events market.
