WhatsApp brings more Liquid Glass styling to its iOS app

WhatsApp is continuing to rebuild its iPhone interface around Apple’s Liquid Glass design language, with more visual changes now appearing in development for the app’s drawing tools and video playback controls.

The latest work suggests Meta is treating the redesign as an ongoing transition rather than a single interface update. WhatsApp began rolling out its broader Liquid Glass look earlier this year after months of testing, but several parts of the app have continued to use older interface elements.

According to details spotted in a recent iOS beta, WhatsApp is preparing to refresh the drawing editor used when annotating photos, videos and GIFs before sending them. Controls for adding text, drawing and placing stickers are being redesigned to better match the translucent, layered appearance Apple introduced across its current software.

The app’s video player is also being updated. WhatsApp is working on a new progress bar that follows the same Liquid Glass styling, bringing another frequently used element into line with the rest of the interface.

These changes are relatively small on their own, but they matter because design consistency is one of the biggest challenges for large apps adopting a new platform-wide visual system. WhatsApp has accumulated years of custom menus, controls and media tools, so replacing everything at once would be difficult without risking usability problems.

Meta has already been experimenting with the same visual direction in other parts of WhatsApp. Voice message controls, reactions and context menus have all been tested with Liquid Glass-inspired elements, although availability has varied between beta and public builds.

That uneven rollout has become part of the story. Some iPhone users still appear not to have received the first wave of WhatsApp’s Liquid Glass redesign, even as development moves ahead on later interface changes. It is a reminder that visual updates on major messaging platforms are often deployed gradually, with server-side changes and staged testing making the experience inconsistent between users.

WhatsApp is also extending the redesign beyond the iPhone. Similar Liquid Glass changes have been tested or introduced on the iPad and Mac versions of the app, suggesting Meta wants a more unified Apple-platform experience rather than treating iOS as an isolated case.

There is no indication yet of when the newly spotted drawing editor and video player changes will reach users. They are reportedly still under development and are not currently available to beta testers.

That makes the latest update more of a preview than a release, but it also shows how extensively WhatsApp is adapting to Apple’s new design system. The app may already look more at home on modern iOS, but Meta clearly has more interface cleanup ahead before the transition feels complete.
