Corsair upgrades RM850e and RM1000e with ThermalProtect GPU cable

Corsair is updating two of its mainstream high-wattage PC power supplies with a safety feature aimed directly at the increasingly demanding connection between modern GPUs and their power cables. The revised RM850e and RM1000e now ship with Corsair’s ThermalProtect PCIe 5.1 600W 12V-2×6 cable, which can trigger a shutdown if cable temperatures become excessive.

The addition is particularly relevant for PC builders using recent high-end graphics cards. The 12V-2×6 connector is designed to deliver substantial power through a relatively compact connection, making correct installation especially important. Corsair’s approach adds active temperature monitoring rather than relying solely on the user to confirm that the connector has been seated properly.

ThermalProtect places monitoring hardware inside a cable comb positioned 30mm from the GPU connector. Corsair says that if the cable temperature rises beyond 65°C, its over-temperature protection system activates and causes the GPU to shut down. The objective is to stop temperatures from continuing to climb before they can potentially damage the cable or connected hardware.

There is a simpler preventative measure built into the cable as well. Both ends use dual-tone connectors, giving builders a visual indication of whether the cable has been fully inserted. It is a small detail, but one that addresses a connection where an incomplete fit can have considerably more serious consequences than an untidy PC build.

The refreshed RMe models meet ATX 3.1 requirements and are PCIe 5.1 compliant, while Corsair uses capacitors rated for operation at up to 105°C. Efficiency has also improved. Both models now carry a Cybenetics Platinum rating, up from the Gold certification of their predecessors, with Corsair citing overall efficiency of up to 91%.

Despite targeting relatively powerful systems, the RMe remains compact. Each PSU measures 140mm long, which should make installation easier across a wide range of ATX cases. The fully modular design allows unused cables to remain outside the system, while flexible, debossed cables are included to simplify routing.

Cooling is handled using a custom fan curve, with a Zero RPM mode stopping the PSU fan completely under lighter workloads. That combination of compact dimensions, modular cabling and passive operation at lower loads keeps the RMe positioned as a relatively accessible option rather than a specialist oversized PSU for extreme builds.

The RM850e and RM1000e configurations are available in black and white and come with seven-year warranties. The ThermalProtect cable requires a graphics card equipped with a native 12V-2×6 connection, so it is not a universal safety upgrade for older GPUs.

Power supplies rarely receive much attention once a PC has been assembled, but increasingly power-hungry graphics hardware has made the GPU connection itself an important part of system reliability. Corsair’s temperature monitoring does not eliminate the need to install cables correctly, but adding a hardware-level safeguard makes considerably more sense than assuming every high-current connection will remain perfect for years.
