David Robert Mitchell is heading back into unsettling territory with The End of Oak Street, a new science-fiction thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor. The film arrives in cinemas and IMAX across the region on 13 August 2026, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling its worldwide distribution.
The premise takes an ordinary suburban setting and removes the one thing its residents probably take for granted: the rest of the world. After an unexplained cosmic event, Oak Street and its entire neighbourhood are apparently torn from their familiar surroundings and transported somewhere unknown.
At the centre of the story is the Platt family, who suddenly find themselves trying to survive in an environment they no longer recognise. Details about where the neighbourhood has ended up — and what exactly caused the event — are being kept deliberately vague ahead of release. What is clear is that the family dynamic will play a major role, with staying together becoming as important as understanding whatever has happened outside their front doors.
Hathaway and McGregor lead the cast, with Maisy Stella and Christian Convery also appearing. It is a combination that gives the film a mix of established star power and younger talent, although much will depend on how Mitchell balances the human drama against the larger mystery surrounding Oak Street.
That balancing act should be particularly interesting given the director involved. Mitchell is best known for 2014’s It Follows, which turned a relatively simple supernatural concept into one of the more distinctive horror films of the decade. He followed it with the considerably stranger Under the Silver Lake, a sprawling Los Angeles mystery that divided audiences but reinforced his interest in paranoia, hidden patterns and characters struggling to make sense of environments that feel slightly wrong.
The End of Oak Street appears to give him a much larger canvas for those ideas. The film is produced by J.J. Abrams alongside Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, Mitchell, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper. Behind the camera, Mitchell has also assembled an experienced crew that includes cinematographer Michael Gioulakis, production designer Maya Shimoguchi, editor John Axelrad, costume designer Erin Benach and composer Michael Giacchino.
The involvement of Gioulakis is particularly notable given his previous collaboration with Mitchell on It Follows. That film’s carefully composed imagery was central to its atmosphere, making the prospect of the pair tackling an entire displaced suburban neighbourhood an intriguing one.
For Warner Bros., the theatrical and IMAX release also positions The End of Oak Street as something larger than a conventional contained thriller. Yet its unusual premise may work best if Mitchell keeps the focus on the people trapped inside it rather than explaining every piece of the cosmic puzzle.
With its regional release now set for 13 August, audiences won’t have long to discover where Oak Street has gone — or whether finding the answer is actually the point.
