Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film of the director’s career at the worldwide box office, reaching the milestone less than a month into its theatrical run.
The Homer adaptation has now earned $1.104 billion globally, according to figures reported by The Hollywood Reporter. That total includes $461.1 million from the domestic market and another $642.9 million internationally. More importantly for Nolan’s own box office record, it moves The Odyssey ahead of both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises in unadjusted worldwide earnings.
The Dark Knight finished its original run with roughly $1.008 billion globally, while The Dark Knight Rises reached approximately $1.085 billion. The Odyssey has passed both after just 24 days in cinemas, giving the film considerable time to extend its lead.
It is another notable commercial result for Nolan following 2023’s Oppenheimer, which earned close to $1 billion worldwide despite being a three-hour historical drama about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The Odyssey is operating on an even larger scale, with a reported production budget of around $250 million and a cast led by Matt Damon alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Lupita Nyong’o.
There is, however, an important qualification to the new record. Once inflation is considered, Nolan’s Batman films remain comfortably ahead. The Dark Knight would sit at roughly $1.53 billion in adjusted worldwide revenue, while The Dark Knight Rises rises to around $1.58 billion. Inception, which originally collected $839.8 million, would translate to approximately $1.29 billion using similar adjustments.
That leaves The Odyssey with more ground to cover before it can claim to be Nolan’s biggest theatrical release by every measure. Its current pace nevertheless makes the comparison increasingly interesting, particularly because the film has achieved its $1.1 billion total while still relatively early in its theatrical window.
Premium-format screenings are likely playing a role in the numbers. The Odyssey was filmed entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras, making the large-format presentation a central part of its theatrical positioning. IMAX and other premium screenings generally carry higher ticket prices, which can push modern box office totals upward compared with older releases. That is another reason direct comparisons across different eras require some caution.
Even without inflation-adjusted bragging rights, crossing $1 billion places The Odyssey in rare commercial territory. It is also Nolan’s first non-Batman film to pass that threshold in unadjusted dollars, reinforcing how much his name has become a theatrical draw independent of an established superhero franchise.
The next target is Inception’s inflation-adjusted benchmark of roughly $1.29 billion. Whether The Odyssey gets there will depend on how well it holds through the remainder of the summer, but its first 24 days have already rewritten Nolan’s conventional box office rankings.
