Apple releases macOS Tahoe 26.6.1 with critical security fix

Apple has released macOS Tahoe 26.6.1, a security-focused update that addresses a vulnerability affecting the operating system’s Screen Sharing feature. The release arrives just over a week after macOS Tahoe 26.6 and is aimed at closing a flaw that could have allowed unauthorized access under specific network conditions.

According to Apple’s security documentation, the vulnerability could have enabled an attacker on the same network to authenticate to Screen Sharing without valid credentials. Apple says the issue stemmed from an authentication flaw and has been resolved through improved state management.

The security issue has been assigned the identifier CVE-2026-65400 and was reported by security researcher Alfredo Pesoli, known online as @__rev, through the Bynario Atlas vulnerability research program.

Unlike feature updates that introduce new capabilities or interface changes, macOS Tahoe 26.6.1 is focused entirely on improving system security. While Apple has not disclosed whether the flaw was actively exploited, the company typically withholds technical details until users have had time to install patches, reducing the risk of attackers targeting unpatched devices.

The update is available now through the Software Update section of System Settings on compatible Macs running macOS Tahoe. Apple recommends installing security updates as soon as possible, particularly when they address authentication or remote access vulnerabilities.

The fix is not limited to the latest version of macOS. Apple has also released security updates for older operating systems still receiving maintenance support. macOS Sonoma 14.8.9 and macOS Sequoia 15.7.9 include the same Screen Sharing patch, allowing users who have not yet upgraded to macOS Tahoe to remain protected.

The simultaneous release across multiple versions of macOS reflects Apple’s ongoing approach to supporting previous operating system generations with critical security fixes. This policy helps organizations and individual users who delay major OS upgrades continue receiving protection against newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Screen Sharing is commonly used for remote troubleshooting, technical support, and accessing Macs over a local network or the internet. Because authentication is central to preventing unauthorized access, vulnerabilities affecting these services are generally treated as high priority, even when exploitation requires network access.

Although macOS Tahoe 26.6.1 does not introduce new user-facing features, it serves as an important reminder that routine security updates remain one of the most effective ways to protect Macs from emerging threats. As attackers increasingly target authentication mechanisms and remote management services, timely patching continues to be a critical part of maintaining device security.
