Google Maps has edged further from pure navigation into the business of completing everyday tasks. Its Ask Maps feature, powered by Gemini and first introduced in March, can now order food, book hotel rooms and locate event tickets, though the new capabilities remain limited to the United States for the time being.
Where earlier versions of Ask Maps merely suggested restaurants or venues, the updated assistant attempts to finish the sequence. A request for vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near home can return matching options, assemble a cart through Square, Toast or Uber Eats, and then hand the user over to the partner platform for payment. Hotel queries that specify price range, ratings and atmosphere prompt comparisons of availability before directing the user to the booking site. Searches for comedy or live music the same evening surface listings with ticket links. In each case the map stops short of processing the final transaction itself.
The commercial intent is straightforward. By sitting between the user’s request and the specialist app or site, Google positions its mapping service as an intermediary in flows that currently run through delivery platforms and travel aggregators. This follows a longer pattern in which Maps has steadily accumulated layers of utility—reviews, real-time traffic, business information—while remaining free to the end user and monetised through advertising and data.
A related addition called Personal Intelligence draws on Gmail and Google Calendar to answer questions about flight times or nearby dining options tied to a user’s itinerary. The feature is switched off by default, a practical concession to those who prefer not to have their correspondence scanned for context. Ask Maps also retains conversation history across sessions and includes a live transit widget that tracks delays as they occur.
Outside the United States the picture is more limited. Personal Intelligence and the transit widget are rolling out to markets where Ask Maps already exists, currently the US and India. No date has been given for the Middle East. The food-ordering partners are American services; in the UAE the dominant platforms are talabat and Deliveroo, so any future version would require fresh local integrations. Dubai’s RTA schedules already appear in Google Maps, giving the transit widget something concrete to monitor once the assistant arrives.
The shift reflects a wider industry move toward agentic tools that claim to act rather than merely inform. Earlier voice assistants promised similar convenience with uneven results, often stumbling on reliability or regional availability. Google’s advantage lies in the dense data already sitting inside Maps, Gmail and Calendar, yet that same integration raises familiar questions about how much personal information users are willing to surface for marginal convenience. For now the map continues to point more than it performs outside the United States, a familiar lag that has characterised many of the company’s advanced features.
