Google is reshaping leadership at its DeepMind unit as the company pushes deeper into advanced artificial intelligence. Demis Hassabis will move from day-to-day operational control to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He will continue running Isomorphic Labs, the company’s drug-discovery arm, and will advise on models and research while focusing more of his time on the broader questions surrounding artificial general intelligence and scientific applications.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently Chief Technology Officer of DeepMind and Google’s Chief AI Architect, will take over as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind and report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai. In the new role he will oversee development of the Gemini models, frontier research, and the teams responsible for the Gemini consumer app and developer tools. Kavukcuoglu has been with DeepMind since its early years and previously led work on foundational deep-learning systems.
Separately, Jeff Dean, after 27 years at the company, is leaving to co-found an independent public benefit corporation with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. The new organization will pursue advances in machine learning, science and engineering. Google intends to remain involved as a founding investor and cloud partner while collaborating on related research infrastructure.
The changes arrive at a moment when large technology firms are racing to improve model capabilities, expand product reach and claim progress toward more general forms of AI. DeepMind has long occupied a distinctive position inside Alphabet, combining research ambitions with the parent company’s infrastructure and distribution strength. Shifting Hassabis toward a more strategic and external-facing role frees operational bandwidth for the teams building and shipping current systems, yet it also concentrates day-to-day responsibility for Gemini’s trajectory on a smaller group of leaders.
Leadership transitions of this kind have become familiar across the industry as companies balance short-term product competition against longer-term research goals. Hassabis has repeatedly framed the current period as a critical juncture for ensuring advanced AI develops in ways that benefit humanity, a view that now shapes his formal mandate. Whether the new structure accelerates progress or simply redistributes existing pressures will depend on how cleanly the advisory and operational lines remain separated and how effectively the Gemini organization executes under its new head.
The departure of Dean, one of Google’s most influential engineers, removes a long-standing internal figure whose work spanned search infrastructure and the neural networks that helped define modern AI. His new public-benefit vehicle continues a pattern in which senior technical talent leaves the main corporate structure while retaining formal ties. For DeepMind the practical test will be whether the reorganized leadership can maintain research momentum while competing in a market where model quality, cost and product integration are measured in rapid cycles.
