Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones have delivered the company’s strongest preorder performance in its home market in more than six years, setting a new domestic record and highlighting growing consumer demand for premium foldable devices.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8 secured approximately 1.44 million preorders in South Korea during the launch period. That surpasses the previous company record of 1.38 million preorders established by the Galaxy Note10 series in 2019, making the Galaxy Z8 lineup Samsung’s most successful domestic launch to date.
The result also marks a significant improvement over previous flagship releases. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 series recorded around 1.04 million preorders in South Korea, while the Galaxy S26 family reached approximately 1.35 million units during its preorder window.
A major contributor to the record-breaking performance was the Galaxy Z Fold8, which accounted for roughly 70% of all preorders. The strong demand reflects growing interest in Samsung’s redesigned book-style foldable, which introduces a wider form factor intended to improve usability while maintaining a compact footprint. The updated design also adopts a 4:3 inner display, making the device better suited to productivity tasks, multitasking and video consumption.
Colour preferences varied across the range. Samsung said Cream and Graphite emerged as the most popular finishes for the Galaxy Z Fold8, while Fold8 Ultra buyers largely opted for Graphite and Violet Shadow. Among Galaxy Z Flip8 customers, Pink and Cream proved to be the most sought-after colours.
The figures suggest Samsung’s continued investment in foldable smartphones is paying off, particularly in its domestic market where early adoption has historically been strongest. While foldables remain a relatively small segment of the global smartphone market compared with conventional flagship devices, they have steadily moved from niche products to mainstream premium offerings over the past several years.
Competition in the category is also intensifying. Manufacturers including Honor, Huawei, Google, Motorola and Oppo have all expanded their foldable portfolios, placing greater pressure on Samsung to maintain its leadership in a market it effectively pioneered. Strong preorder demand for the Galaxy Z8 series indicates the company remains well positioned despite the growing number of alternatives.
Outside South Korea, Samsung continues to accept preorders for the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8 in several markets until 7 August. Promotional offers include enhanced trade-in incentives and Samsung credit in selected regions, continuing the company’s strategy of using launch promotions to encourage upgrades to its latest foldable devices.
While preorder figures do not necessarily translate directly into long-term sales performance, the record-breaking launch provides another indication that foldable smartphones are becoming an increasingly important part of Samsung’s premium mobile business rather than a specialist product category.
