WhatsApp users across several countries, including a significant number in India, found themselves unexpectedly locked out of their accounts this week after the messaging platform placed them under a temporary “account in review” status, interrupting access to chats and calls for up to 24 hours.
The disruption prompted a wave of complaints on social media, where affected users said they had received no advance warning before the restriction appeared. Many insisted they were using the official version of WhatsApp and had not engaged in any activity that would normally violate the platform’s terms of service. For users who depend on the app for work, customer communication, or everyday conversations, the temporary suspension created immediate disruption and uncertainty.
According to reports, the issue became widely noticeable on Monday evening when users began seeing a notification explaining that their account activity and device information were being reviewed to determine compliance with WhatsApp’s rules. The message indicated that the review would typically be completed within 24 hours, leaving affected users unable to use core messaging features while the process was underway.
In response, WhatsApp acknowledged that its enforcement systems are not perfect. The Meta-owned service said it continuously works to identify abuse on the platform through automated detection tools, but recognised that legitimate accounts can occasionally be flagged by mistake. The company added that it aims to restore access as quickly as possible whenever an incorrect decision is identified.
The incident has renewed attention on the growing reliance of major technology platforms on automated moderation systems. Services such as WhatsApp process enormous volumes of activity every day, making manual enforcement impractical. Machine-learning systems are therefore used to detect spam, fraud, coordinated abuse and compromised accounts. While these systems help protect billions of users, false positives remain an ongoing challenge, particularly when legitimate accounts exhibit behaviour that algorithms interpret as unusual.
Posts shared on X suggested the issue was not limited to one region. Users from multiple countries reported similar review notices, with many expressing concern that business communications, customer support conversations and personal messages had been interrupted without explanation. Although widespread, there has been no indication that the reviews were linked to a security breach or coordinated cyberattack.
For now, the episode serves as a reminder of how dependent many people have become on a single messaging platform for both personal and professional communication. As automated enforcement becomes increasingly central to online safety, technology companies continue to face the difficult task of balancing rapid threat detection with safeguards that minimise unnecessary disruptions for legitimate users.
