WhatsApp Web has long been a convenient way to keep conversations going on a computer, but calling remained locked behind the mobile and desktop apps. That gap is closing. Users can now place and receive one-on-one and group voice and video calls directly in a supported browser, without installing anything extra. The feature arrives after years of the web client serving mainly as a messaging companion, leaving anyone on a locked-down work machine or shared computer to either skip calls or download software they might not be allowed to install.
The new browser experience includes the same core tools already available elsewhere: screen sharing, in-call reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that surfaces recent history and favorite contacts. Calls remain end-to-end encrypted, free of charge, and unrestricted by time limits. For Linux users the change carries extra weight. Meta has never shipped an official desktop client for the platform, so the web version has been the only practical option. Adding voice and video removes one more reason to keep a secondary device nearby just for a call.
Another practical addition is the ability to move an active group call between phone, tablet, web, and desktop without dropping the connection. Someone can start on a mobile handset and shift to a larger screen when the discussion needs more space. Call links also gain an optional waiting room. When the host turns on “Require approval to join,” each participant waits for explicit permission before entering, a small but useful control for larger or more formal groups.
Video quality receives a modest tweak with QuickHD, which prioritizes higher-definition frames in the opening seconds of a call. Background noise suppression is now available as well and can be toggled from the in-call settings. These refinements address common complaints about echo and muffled audio without promising perfection in every environment.
None of this arrives overnight. Meta is rolling the features out gradually, so availability will vary by account and region for some time. The underlying reality remains that WhatsApp Web still depends on a linked phone for the initial setup and ongoing connectivity. Browser-based calling removes the need for a separate desktop install, yet it does not make the service fully independent of the mobile ecosystem. In a landscape where competitors have offered web or desktop calling for longer, the update simply brings WhatsApp closer to parity rather than inventing a new model of communication.
For people who spend most of their day in a browser and prefer not to install yet another app, the change is welcome and overdue. It reduces friction on restricted devices and gives Linux users a more complete experience. Whether it becomes the default way people make calls, or simply a useful fallback, will depend on reliability and how consistently the features reach every account.
