A fresh trailer for the HBO series Lanterns has surfaced, offering a clearer look at its tone and a few of its more familiar faces. The clip leans into the uneasy partnership between Hal Jordan and his trainee Jon Stewart while quietly confirming the presence of Sinestro, Green Lantern’s long-time antagonist, and leaving little doubt that larger Justice League threads are already being woven in.
The opening sequence shows Kyle Chandler’s Hal roughly waking Aaron Pierre’s Jon, establishing a mentor-trainee dynamic that carries clear echoes of Training Day. As the pair dig into a string of crimes across the American heartland, Hal’s suspicion that the perpetrators are not human proves correct. The antagonists turn out to be Manhunters, shape-shifting extraterrestrial enforcers capable of assuming any form. Tension between the two leads surfaces quickly; Jon makes no secret of his resentment, telling Hal that the ring “has always been mine” and that Jordan is merely keeping it warm. Nathan Fillion appears briefly as Guy Gardner, and Sinestro receives his first substantial screen time in the new continuity.
Lanterns is positioned as a grounded procedural rather than a pure superhero showcase. Co-created by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy and comic writer Tom King, the series mixes buddy-cop rhythms with the slow-burn mystery style associated with True Detective. It unfolds across two timelines, 2016 and 2026, the latter set after the events of Superman. The dual structure allows the show to function as both origin story and connective tissue, particularly through Pierre’s casting, which already links the series to the forthcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
The project carries noticeable weight inside James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe. After the animated Creature Commandos and the second season of Peacemaker, Lanterns is the only live-action DC series scheduled for this year. The recent theatrical underperformance of Supergirl has only increased the pressure for a clear win on the streaming side. Setting the story primarily on Earth, away from the cosmic scale of earlier Green Lantern attempts, feels like a deliberate course correction. Previous big-screen efforts struggled to balance the Corps’ intergalactic scope with human stakes; this version appears to reverse the emphasis, treating the ring-bearers as investigators first and cosmic police second.
Whether the True Detective influence translates into sustained tension or simply becomes another layer of prestige packaging remains to be seen. The inclusion of Sinestro so early suggests the writers are not interested in delaying the franchise’s central conflict, and the visible Justice League breadcrumbs indicate a longer game is already underway. Lanterns arrives August 16. Until then, the trailer offers the clearest indication yet of how Gunn’s DCU intends to handle one of its most iconic properties: less spectacle for its own sake, more friction between the people wearing the rings.
