God of War Laufey release date locked for early 2027

Santa Monica Studio has locked in a release window for its next God of War project, confirming that the spin-off titled God of War Laufey will arrive on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The date emerged during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where the team also shared a new teaser after months of gradual reveals.

The game centers on Deborah Ann Woll’s portrayal of Laufey, the character previously known as Faye. She first appeared in the 2022 entry God of War Ragnarök. The story picks up shortly after her death in the 2018 soft reboot, placing her in a realm called Everywhen, described as an afterlife reserved for gods. Early footage has shown her facing figures drawn from outside the Norse pantheon, including the Mongolian war god Begtse and the Egyptian deity Sekhmet. The studio has left open the possibility of further cross-mythological encounters, though any involvement of Thor remains pure speculation at this stage.

This approach continues the franchise’s long-standing habit of treating mythology as a flexible toolbox rather than a fixed set of rules. Since the series shifted from Greek to Norse settings, it has repeatedly mixed cultural traditions to create conflict and spectacle. God of War Laufey appears to push that method further by moving the action into a liminal space where multiple pantheons can collide without needing elaborate justifications. Whether that choice deepens the narrative or simply expands the combat roster will depend on the final script and systems.

The confirmation arrives amid a crowded stretch of high-profile releases. 2026 already includes the long-awaited James Bond title from IO Interactive, a remastered Assassin’s Creed entry, college football simulation updates, and the PlayStation 5 ports of two older Call of Duty campaigns. Later in the year come Marvel’s Wolverine and Grand Theft Auto VI. In that context, an early 2027 date for a God of War spin-off looks deliberate rather than delayed. It gives the studio room to finish after the State of Play showing in June and the Comic-Con presentation, while positioning the game ahead of the denser autumn slate that typically dominates industry attention.

Woll’s casting remains one of the more interesting elements. Bringing a live-action performer into a major motion-capture role is no longer unusual, yet it still carries expectations about emotional range and physical presence. The character’s shift from a quiet presence in the 2018 game to the central figure of her own story will test how well the writing balances personal stakes against the larger mythological brawls the series is known for.

For now the details remain limited to combat snippets and broad story placement. What is clear is that Santa Monica is treating the project as a full entry rather than a smaller experimental side story, complete with its own marketing push and a firm calendar slot. Players will have to wait until next February to see whether the afterlife setting and expanded cast deliver something that feels distinct within a franchise that has already reinvented itself once.
