Lucasfilm plans A New Hope graphic novel for anniversary

Lucasfilm is marking the approaching 50th anniversary of Star Wars by returning to the film that started it all, though not with another theatrical remake. Instead the studio is developing an original graphic novel that retells the events of Episode IV – A New Hope from several distinct viewpoints. The project, titled Star Wars: A New Hope: Triple Take, was revealed during the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 as part of a broader slate of books covering different eras of the franchise.

The 1977 film remains the foundation of the entire series. Its anniversary in 2027 offers the company a natural moment to revisit the story without the scale and scrutiny that a live-action remake would invite. A graphic novel format lets creators shift perspective across characters and moments while staying inside the established narrative. Multiple-angle retellings have appeared before in comics and novels, yet framing the original adventure this way still carries the risk of feeling like familiar ground revisited rather than new territory opened.

Publishing has long served as a quieter extension of Star Wars storytelling. While films and series attract the largest audiences, books and comics have filled gaps, explored side characters, and tested ideas that later migrated to screen. Triple Take continues that tradition by focusing on the most familiar story rather than expanding into unexplored corners of the timeline. Whether the multiple-perspective approach yields genuine insight or simply rearranges well-known beats will depend on the execution once the book appears.

Anniversary projects often walk a narrow line between celebration and commercial recycling. Special editions, restored prints, and commemorative merchandise have accompanied previous milestones. A graphic novel sits comfortably among those efforts: it requires less investment than a film, reaches an existing readership, and keeps the original trilogy in circulation without demanding new performances or effects work. At the same time, the steady stream of returns to A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi can leave the impression that the franchise remains more comfortable circling its origins than moving decisively beyond them.

The announcement arrived alongside other publishing plans that span the full chronology, suggesting Lucasfilm intends to keep its literary output active across both classic and newer material. For readers who already know the 1977 story by heart, Triple Take offers another lens on the same events. For the company, it provides a relatively low-risk way to acknowledge a major anniversary while the larger screen slate continues on its own schedule.
