Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 open beta dates locked in

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has locked in its open beta schedule, giving players two separate windows to sample the multiplayer before the October 23 launch. An early-access period runs from August 21 to 25 for anyone who pre-ordered on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, or PC. A wider open beta follows from August 28 to September 1 and expands the pool to every platform, including the Nintendo Switch 2. Infinity Ward is using the sessions to showcase maps, modes, new Operators, and a roster of 19 weapons.

The most notable addition is Kill Block, a fresh mode the studio has only lightly described so far. Alongside it sit familiar staples such as Search & Destroy and a Training Mobility Course designed to let players experiment with movement systems. These betas have become standard practice for the annual Call of Duty cycle, offering Infinity Ward a final public stress test while giving pre-order customers a tangible perk. Whether the early window meaningfully improves the finished product remains an open question; previous Modern Warfare betas have mixed polished gunplay with lingering netcode and balance issues that sometimes carried into launch.

Including the Switch 2 from the start marks a shift. Earlier Call of Duty entries treated Nintendo hardware as an afterthought or skipped it entirely. Bringing the hybrid console into the open beta suggests Activision wants the game available on every major platform at release rather than staggered later. That decision could broaden the player base, though it also raises the usual questions about performance parity and control schemes on a device still finding its footing in the multiplayer space.

The two-weekend structure follows a well-worn template. Early access rewards the most committed buyers, then the open session floods the servers with a larger audience for data collection. For a series that lives and dies by its multiplayer population, the approach makes commercial sense. It also locks in the October window with enough lead time for final tuning. Kill Block will face the quickest scrutiny; new modes often generate the loudest feedback, and Infinity Ward will have only a few weeks afterward to iterate before the full launch.

In the broader context of the franchise, these betas serve as both marketing and quality control. They generate highlights and complaints in equal measure, shape public expectations, and give the developers one last chance to adjust before the annual release treadmill moves on. Players curious about the gunplay, the new mode, or simply how the game runs on Switch 2 now have clear dates to mark. The rest will come down to whether the sessions feel like genuine progress or another polished demo that still needs work.
